The app. and method are described for heat treatment of powd. mineral material in cement clinker manuf. The app. is comprised of 4 successive, vertically arranged, cyclone preheaters, a CaSO4 and flue gas dust sepn. vessel or cyclone, a rotary tube furnace, and a system of gas- and raw material conduits. The furnace waste gas stream is used to heat the cement raw material in the cyclone preheaters. Addnl. fuel is burned in the hottest cyclone preheaters. The SO2 and dust particles in the furnace flue gas stream are pptd. and sepd. simultaneously, as CaSO4, using CaO and/or CaCO3 in the sepn. vessel.
