PURPOSE:To manufacture an infrared light tranmitting material having low scattering loss caused by the crystallization and excellent transmission characteristics, by using a glass consisting of fluorides of Zr, Ba, Na and La at specific ratios, as the core material. CONSTITUTION:A mixture composed of 58-69mol% ZrF4, 12-23mol% BaF2, 9-25mol% NaF and 1-7mol% LaF3 is mixed with a proper amount of NH4 HF2, and molten in a platinum crucible at <= about 800 deg.C to obtain glass having large difference between the glass transition temperature and the crystallization temperature and high stability against crystallization. An optical fiber having excellent characteristics as a medium for transmitting infrared rays can be manufactured by spinning using the glass as a core and a tetrafluoroethylene- hexafluoropropylene copolymer resin as a clad. |
