The invention relates to a display having an optical fibre at the front and a light source arranged at the side. It is proposed to configure the part of the display device which generates and distributes the light as follows: in its section which covers the optically active display layer, the optical fibre has a wedge shape, i.e. the rear of the wedge lies in the display plane, while the front of the wedge is somewhat inclined with respect to the display plane. The wedge section has no optical contacts with the remaining display parts, it receives the artificial light through its base face; this arrangement is made such that the light received through the base face, which firstly impinges on the inclined wedge base, undergoes at least one total reflection. The aperture angles for the wedge section are normally between 4 DEG and 12 DEG . In a preferred exemplary embodiment, the optical fibre is lengthened beyond the base face of the wedge section, bent rearwards and silvered in its bent region and provided with an embedded light source. If the display has two external polarisers, it is advisable to place the optical fibre between the front linear polariser and the front carrier plate.
