PURPOSE:To prepare anthraquinone in high yield, by the catalytic vapor-phase oxidation of a benzophenone compound with an oxygen-containing gas in the presence of a catalyst containing the oxides of vanadium, molybdenum and/or tungsten. CONSTITUTION:Anthraquinone is prepared by the catalytic vapor-phase oxidation of a benzophenone compound of formula (R1 and R2 are H, alkyl or cycloalkyl, provided that R1 and R2 are not H at the same time)(e.g. 2,2'-dimethylbenzophenone) in the presence of a catalyst containing vanadium oxide, molybdenum oxide and/or tungsten oxide. 2,2'-Dimethylbenzophenone which is the most frequently used raw material, can be prepared easily, e.g. by the thermal decomposition of an o-toluic acid salt. |
