PREPARATION OF 2-HYDROXY-3,3-DI-SUBSTITUTED-PROPIONIC ACID DERIVATIVE

PURPOSE:To prepare the titled compound useful as a synthetic intermediate of pharmaceuticals, in a short time, by condensing 2-nitrothiophenol with trans-3- (4-methoxyphenyl)glycidic acid ester in the presence of a Lewis acid. CONSTITUTION:A trans-3-(4-methoxyphenyl)glycidic acid ester and 2-nitrothiophenol are subjected to the condensation reaction in the presence of a Lewis acid such as boron trifuloride to obtain a threo-2-hydroxy-3-(4-methoxyphenyl)- 3-(3-nitrophenyl-thio)propionic acid ester of formulaI(R is ester residue). The reaction completes usually within 5min-10hr. EFFECT:The objective compound can be prepared in high yield in contrast with the case of using a trans-3-phenylglycidic acid ester having no substituent group on the benzene ring.
