The water heater, which uses solar energy during the day, has a thermally insulated tank (10) containing both a heat exchanger coil (14) coupled to a solar collector (15), and an electric heating element (12). The water heater storage tank has part of its volume filled with a reserve of water required for daily use, and another part used to accumulate heat accumulated from the solar panel. The electric heating is applied only to the volume occupied by the daily useage water. The relative volume of total capacity to daily useage capacity is 5/3. The electric heating may be controlled to be effective only during times of 'off-peak' electricity rates. The volume of water in the tank is controlled by a pump (18) actuated (21) in response to temp. transducers (19,20), and the electric heater is controlled by a thermostat.
|
