In a diaphragm pump the diaphragm separating the pumping chamber from the discharge chamber is clamped, so as to be free of pressure, between the casing body and the pump cover. To this end there is provided, radially outside the diaphragm clamping face, a circumferential pressure equalisation chamber which communicates with the discharge chamber via at least one connecting duct. There is further arranged, radially outside the pressure equalisation chamber and between the pump cover and the casing body, a separate ring seal (ring packing) which seals the pressure equalisation chamber and the discharge chamber externally. As a result, the diaphragm pump is suitable for delivery pressures of far above 350 bar and at the same time permits the use of operationally reliable, highly displacement-effective plastic diaphragms. <IMAGE>
