An economical, continuous method of converting solid carbon-containing fuels into commercially usable combustible gases is described. The method is to decompose the fuel into a combustible gas and a residual waste product in the limited presence of oxygen and with restricted oxidation reactions, to supply the combustible gas and other accompanying gases for commercial utilisation and to remove the waste product. In this process, it is possible to convert the combustible gases and the accompanying gases into thermal energy and gas-pressure energy and these energies can be used to drive steam-driven electrical power generators, gas turbines and/or other types of internal combustion engines.
