In known fibre-optic ring interferometers, the Sagnac phase difference is compensated by means of a control loop which contains technically complicated acousto-optic modulators. The invention specifies a phase-compensating method which operates using saw-tooth periodic signals and permits the use of optical phase modulators which are technically simpler.
