To produced fixed dressings, in particular shells, for parts of the body of the ill or injured, plaster has generally been used hitherto, a plaster of Paris cast being applied in a layer of great thickness in order to ensure sufficient resistance to compression and breaking. In order to be able to produce a fixed dressing which is of light weight, but which nevertheless has high resistance to compression and breaking and is easy to handle when applying and removing, it is proposed to cut a preform from a flat sheet of PVA rigid foam (polyvinyl alcohol) and then to bring this preform into the desired final shape by heating by means of steam.
