The object of the invention is to remove films and film residues from face plates of cathode ray tubes, in particular to clean the edges of such face plates. To this end, the procedure according to the invention involves treating the face plates to be cleaned with a mixture which consists of water and at least one solvent which is able to dissolve resins and lacquer raw materials and is miscible in any ratio with other solvents and water.
