The invention relates to a flame tube boiler having one or more pre-combustion chambers for the firing of coal dust or other barely ignitable fuels. The separate, double-walled pre-combustion chamber which is cooled by water and has an arched base and insulated inner surface makes it possible to form a rotating reversing flame and thus provides optimum preconditions for good ignition and complete combustion of the coal dust. The pre-combustion chamber is prefabricated in the factory and can be mounted - even subsequently -on the flame tube boiler in a short period of time. Already operating flame tube boilers can thus be converted from oil or gas firings to firings on coal dust. In terms of the fuel, this conversion not only increases the supply reliability, but also permits a reduction in fuel costs to be achieved since, nowadays, the heating cost of coal dust is considerably lower than the heating costs of heating oil or natural gas. <IMAGE>
