The seal possesses a seal profile which consists of deformable material, such as rubber, and is received in a groove and which has an inner deformation cavity extending in the longitudinal direction of the profile and, in the non-deformed state, projects with part of its cross-section beyond a contact surface, in which the groove receiving the seal profile extends. At the same time, means for spreading the seal profile apart laterally during its deformation into the receiving groove are provided in the region of the deformation cavity, so that, whenever the part of the profile cross-section projecting out of the receiving groove when the seal profile is non-deformed is deformed into the receiving groove, the seal profile not only experiences a prestress coming within the scope of its elastic deformability, but is spread apart laterally in such a way that an increased surface pressure occurs between the groove walls laterally limiting the receiving groove and the corresponding outer surfaces of the seal profile.
