A reciprocating engine havin piston (10), connecting rod (12) and a crankshaft (14) is balanced against vibration by a balancing link (17) pivotally attached to the crankshaft. The other end of the balancing link is attached to a guide link (19) to cause the guide link to move along a path normal to the crankshaft axis. The position of attachment of the guide link to the balancing link is at the centre of percussion (E) of the balancing link which is displaced from the centre of gravity (G) of the balancing link a distance according to the polar radius of gyration of the balancing link and the distance between said centre of gravity and the point of attachment of the balancing link to the crankshaft.
