A pneumatic cushion is fabricated from two sheets (32, 34) of expandable thin material which are welded together at a circumferential portion thereof to define therebetween an expandable pneumatic chamber (38). The welded portion (36) is separated from the pneumatic chamber (38) by a substantially rigid board-like member (48). The board-like member (48) cooperates with a portion of the sheets mating therewith for isolating the welded portion (36) from tension forces applied to the pneumatic chamber (38) as the air pressure in this chamber is increased.
