The method involves introducing a board (8) between a stationary plate or table (2) and a press plate (3) which is vertically movable. The board rests on an elastic bed (7) and is subjected to a press force via the press plate. The applied pressure is in the range of between 20 and 60 MPa. The material of the elastic bed (7) is able to accommodate the projecting portion of a knot (9) without the knot being splintered. The soft wood board (8) will thus be permanently compressed while the knot will be partially projected. This facilitates the removal of the knot by grinding after the compression operation.
