A cylindrical preform intended for forming the container (30) is heated to an orientation temperature, the material of the preform is biaxially oriented by moulding it in a blowing mould (29), and then it is heat-set by bringing into contact the external surface of the wall of the expanded container with the internal surface (31) of the wall of the mould, this wall being held at a temperature between the glass transition temperature and the crystallisation temperature, for more than 5 seconds. The blowing mould is constructed with a volume which takes into the account the approximately 6 % shrinkage of the final container when the latter is exposed to a temperature above 70 DEG C and then left to stand, so as to obtain a container of precise volume. <IMAGE>
