A shaft (4) held in two ball bearings (1, 2) in a housing (3) and subject to high running requirements is to be free from axial play without the imposition of unnecessarily high friction torques while remaining simple to assemble. One bearing (1) is designed as a fixed bearing, while the outer race (5) of the other bearing (2) is initially held in the seat (6) of the housing (3) in a manner which allows slight axial displacement and is subject to the force of the spring (8) which gives the mounting the desired axial preload. The last assembly operation is the fixing of the outer race (5) in its seat (6), which is accomplished by bonding or welding or shrinking.
