<p>A process for applying multilayer protective and/or decorative coatings on substrate surfaces comprises covering the surfaces with a primer contg. a film-forming agent, a volatile solvent and finely divided pigment, and applying a transparent top-coat compsn. contg. a film-forming polymer and volatile carrier solvent to produce a second polymer film covering the first film. The primer comprises an aq. dispersion of crosslinked polymer particles(dia. 0.01-10 microns), which are insoluble in the aq. medium but do not flocculate, such that the medium has a pseudo-plastic or thixotropic character. The process is esp. applicable to coating car bodies.</p> |
