Energy is gathered from the swell of the sea by the oscillation of floats (8) supported on arms (6,7) pivoted from a stationary support. The oscillation of the arms pressurises a hydraulic working fluid, and the pressurised fluid drives a hydraulic motor having its output coupled to an electric generator. The support (1) comprises a floating enclosure (1) which houses the hydraulic motor and the electric generator. The enclosure is anchored by weighted (3) cables (2). The two lengths (6,7) are used, one half the length of the other. The longer arm length is the average wavelength of the marine swell, so that the choice of arm length ensures one arm is usually up while the other is down, ensuring sustained pressurisation of the hydraulic fluid.
|
