An illustration and description is given of a process for the pressuretight fixing of a tube (2) in a tube plate (1), the end (3) of the tube (2) to be fixed being inserted with clearance in a hole (4) in the tube plate (1), a pressure build-up mandrel (5), the outside diameter of which is smaller than the inside diameter of the end (3) of the tube, being inserted into the said end, the space (6) between the end (3) of the tube and the pressure build-up mandrel (5) being sealed off at both ends from areas (7, 8) of expansion with the aid of at least two seals (9) and a pressurised liquid being fed to the space (6) via at least one pressure-medium feed passage (10) opening into the space (6) between the end (3) of the tube and the pressure build-up mandrel (5). In order with little outlay to avoid an annular gap between the tube plate (1) and the tube (2) fixed in it, the process is carried out in a first process step in an area (7) of expansion which lies at least partially outside the tube plate (1) and at an expansion pressure of the pressurised liquid lower than the normal expansion pressure and this first process step is followed by a second process step in an area (8) of expansion which is completely within the tube plate (1) and at the normal expansion pressure of the pressurised liquid. <IMAGE>
