The present invention relates to an apparatus and a method for generating electrical current. In one embodiment, electron beams are discharged through a succession of elongate electron beam channels each defined by pairs of horizontal and vertical deflection electrodes (40, 41 and 43, 44). The channels are arranged in a parallel array between magnetic pole members (50, 51) which impose on the array a magnetic field with flux directed perpendicularly to the longitudinal axes of the channels. Beams are directed successively through channels spaced one from another in a direction generally perpendicularly to both the axes of the channels and the magnetic flux, and it is this operation which gives rise to the "cutting" of magnetic flux which generates electrical power. Electrical energy for operating the apparatus is derived from a suitable low current source such as a photovoltaic or solar cell. |
