In a flame cutting machine for cutting to length a strand for continuous casting installations with a burner carriage which can be moved on rails laid on both sides of the strand conveying section, a track, on which one or more cutting burners are guided so as to move horizontally, is arranged on the said carriage. The track is arranged in vertically displaceable fashion and, by lowering a driver element onto the strand, can be moved in synchronism with the latter. The driver element is formed by a shielding wall which is connected rigidly to the burner carriage track, can be displaced vertically with the latter and provides protection against slag, smoke and noise. <IMAGE>
