The invention relates to a process and an apparatus for testing pneumatic vehicle tyres. The testing apparatus includes a tyre-turning device and a spreading device. For the testing apparatus, it is proposed that it has a clamping device with clamping elements for fixing a tyre bead, that spreading elements of the spreading device are arranged movably in such a way that, during the cross-sectional spreading of a tyre being tested, they act on the side wall or shoulder of the said tyre adjacent to the clamped tyre bead, clamping elements serving as abutments, and that no elements of the testing apparatus act on the side of the tyre under test opposite the clamped tyre bead. With the apparatus, the simultaneous spreading of a tyre over the entire circumference accomplishes a significant increase in the field of view of the inside of the tyre, in particular in the circumferential direction.
