To prevent acoustic feedback in telephone sets with built-in loudspeakers, depending on the direction of the respective signal flow, optionally either the microphone is muted by a shunt and/or the amplification of the loudspeaker is reduced in such a way that the total amplification of the transmitting and receiving parts remains below the critical singing limit.
