The invention relates to a regenerative heat exchanger with liquid storage medium for the recovery of heat and moisture from spent air or streams of exhaust gas, and for the simultaneous purification of the air. In two shower-type heat exchangers arranged one behind the other, the heat from the spent air is transferred to a liquid, primarily a salt solution. The salt solution thereafter heats the fresh air in counterflow. Furthermore, the moisture precipitated from the spent air is transferred to the fresh air. The conveyance of the two media in counterflow achieves a high efficiency in the recovery of heat and moisture. Furthermore, the fresh air is effectively purified. <IMAGE>
