The invention relates to a method and a device for controlling the tension to be exerted on a workpiece when the workpiece is being rolled in the roll stand of a tandem hot-rolling mill. A rolling torque in the absence of a forward tension is here stored in a storage device, more precisely at a point in time immediately before the leading end of the workpiece enters the following roll stand. The stored rolling torque is then temperature-compensated and compared to a rolling torque during a rolling operation of the tandem stand. The tension exerted on the workpiece by the following roll stand is then calculated, more precisely from the difference between the rolling torques which have been compared to one another, each of the roll stands then being driven in such a way that the tension calculated in this way is made equal to a reference value without the necessity of measuring the rolling force in each roll stand.
