The invention relates to an arrangement for cleaning river courses, canals or the like, in particular of coarse contaminants, by means of gratings or racks arranged in the river course or canal as well as by means of rack-cleaning devices in operative connection with them. It has been found that, in sewage pumping stations which only have the task of pumping water from one station to the next and of finally feeding it to a treatment plant, floating debris is separated to an excessive degree by the known rack constructions. This is because the fine portions of floating debris are only to be caught in the treatment plant, since they are of great importance for the treatment operation. To achieve this aim, the grating or rack bars are to be designed as rows of short bars attached at a distance one behind the other and having passages in between. The short bars are to preferably have a trapezoidal cross-section, the narrow side of the trapezium being directed against the flow direction of the river or canal.
