The invention relates to a method with which two optical fibres (4, 5) can be firmly welded to one another. Before welding, conically expanding, lens-like tongues (7) are welded onto the ends of the two optical fibres. The two tongues are then welded to one another with their free end faces (9), which are very large in relation to the end face of the optical fibres.
