A heat exchanger for operating with the exhaust gases from reciprocating engines, in particular for heating motor vehicles, at least one solely chargeable branch of the exhaust gas flow path, or the latter as a whole being limited in cross-section in such a way that a pressure difference of 0.1-5 bar exists between the inlet and the outlet and the flow velocity in this range is 100-500 m/s.
