PURPOSE:To obtain the titled compound in excellent selectivity, productivity and catalyst life, by oxidizing isobutane in one step using a Mo-containing heteropolyacid having P or As as center atom or a salt of said polyacid as a catalyst in a state of high degree of reduction. CONSTITUTION:Methacrylic acid and/or methacrolein can be produced by oxidizing a gas containing isobutane in the presence or absence of oxygen at 250-450 deg.C using a catalyst comprising a Mo-containing heteropolyacid having P or As as center atom or its salt (e.g. phosphomolybdic acid, arsenomolybdic acid, etc.) at a reduction degree corresponding to 1-6 electrons, especially 2-4 electrons per one molecule of the heteropolyacid. Especially methacrylic acid can be produced from isobutane in high selectivity. The combined selectivity of methacrylic acid and methacrolein exceeds 50%. |
