PURPOSE:To obtain the titled compound, having improved initial color tone and reduced discoloration with time, and useful as a stabilizer for organic compounds without requiring complicated purifying steps, by using an acidic catalyst as a catalyst in the ester interchange reaction of a 3,5-di-alkyl-4-hydroxyphenylpropionic alkyl ester with a high alkyl alcohol. CONSTITUTION:A 3,5-di-alkyl-4-hydroxyphenylpropionic alkyl ester of formulaI (R1 is 1-8C alkyl; R2 and R3 are H or 1-12C alkyl; however, both are not H at the same time) is subjected to the ester interchange reaction with a higher alkyl alcohol of the formula R4-OH (R4 is 4-20C alkyl; however, the carbon number is larger than that of R1) in the presence of an aromatic sulfonic acid, e.g. p-toluenesulfonic acid, or a cation exchange resin as a catalyst, preferably at 60-120 deg.C and 1-30mm.Hg, to give the aimed compound of formula II. Preferably, the amount of the p-toluenesulfonic acid as the catalyst added is 0.01- 0.20mol based on one mole compound of formulaI, and that of the cation exchange resin is 50-150g. |
