869,449. Bending glass sheets. PITTSBURGH PLATE GLASS CO. Aug. 24, 1959 [Aug. 25, 1958], No. 28829/59. Class 56. To ensure lateral alignment of a glass sheet G on a bending mould 20 comprising at least one movable mould section 30 pivoted in relation to another section 22, at least one edge contacting member 50 is operatively connected to the movable section 30 so that the member 50 moves in an arcuate path having a vertical component substantially equal to the vertical distance that the contacted glass edge moves vertically to conform to the mould shaping surface as the mould moves from the spread to the closed position. As shown in a three part mould, two members 50 on the same side of the mould are connected to lever arms 40 having weights 42 by which the end sections 30 are pivoted to the closed position. Each member 50 comprises an apertured bar 52 with a flexible cover 54 of fibre glass, absestos or the like secured by staples 56, the member 50 being secured as by welding to the arm 40. During the bending, the member 50 moves horizontally as between the points 62 and 64 along the edge of the sheet G so that the edge does not suffer distortion or have undesirable stress patterns. The glass sheet G is initially aligned at each end by supporting members 34 having spaced tabs 36 as in Specification 784,115.
