The device comprises a plunger (C) mounted on the ends of the piston rod of a double action jack (D). The plunger projects through the bottom of the hopper (B) of the machine clear of the rotors. The plunger acts on the bottom of the bale being treated to lift it above the rotors (R). The jack can be actuated by remote control or by an automatic control which is dependent on the action of the rotors.
