The invention relates to a gas hearth with a surface burner underneath a continuous cooking plate having perforated burner plates, to which a gas/air mixture is fed by way of combustion chambers located underneath. Arranged at each cooking point (cooking zone 26) of the cooking plate (16) are two or more combustion chambers (6), a gas-feed line (5) opening out at each combustion chamber (6). All the gas-feed lines (5) of a cooking point (26) are connected to a single multi-way valve (1), and by means of the valve (1) the gas-feed lines (5) can be connected in succession particularly to those already carrying gas, in such a way that, with an increasing heat requirement and opening of the valve (1), the number of burning combustion chambers (6) increases. <IMAGE>
