The mechanism counterbalances the second-order inertial forces in a reciprocating machine with vertical cylinders, such as an i.c. engine. A balance weight is mounted below and chain- or gear-driven from the crankshaft on the longitudinal centre line at a speed equal to twice the number of strokes. The balancing shaft (5) has an eccentric stud (9) at the end, facing the machine centre line, which engages in a transverse slot (10) in the balance weight (12), so as to move it up and down.
