In order to produce mechanical energy preferably in an internal combustion process, in which solid or powdered fuel is used, an arrangement is provided with a compressor (10), a combustion chamber (12) connected to the latter but arranged separately from it and an expansion device (14) in turn connected to this chamber and arranged separately from it, it being possible to store the fuel in the combustion chamber (12) or to introduce it into the said chamber by means of lock devices and/or a fan. At the same time the combustion chamber (12) may be divided into individual chambers which are separated from one another and which can be used successively or with overlap for the combustion of fuel. A separator (16) is preferably arranged in the line (18) carrying the combustion gases. Liquid can also be injected into this line (18) for internal cooling and/or afterburning. <IMAGE>
