A video tape recording and reproducing apparatus which uses rotary video heads (21, 22) to record and reproduce video signals and which slightly draws forward a magnetic tape (2) after the lapse of a given time from a temporary stop of the tape during the recording or reproducing, and then again temporarily stop the tape, thereby avoiding damage to the magnetic heads and magnetic tape.
