The ear tag comprises a plate-like element (2) which has an integral hollow (4) with a frusto-conical head (5) at its free end. This shaft extends into a cylindrical part (10) of a female element (1A) which overlies the tag. The smaller face of the frusto-conical head is planar (18) and has a shallow rim along part of its periphery. The head also has a blind axial bore opening onto the larger face to receive the application tool (12). Fraudulent removal of the tag by the tool is prevented by the configuration of the head.
