Poly-p-phenylene terephthalamide or copolymers thereof are prepared by dissolving p-phenylenediamine or p-phenylenediamine and an aromatic diamine from the diphenyl series, of the formula <IMAGE> in which the substituents are defined in Claim 1, in amide salt solvents comprising linear or cyclic N-alkyl-substituted acid amides and alkali metal or alkaline earth metal salts which are soluble in said amides, in an amount of from 1 to 3 mol per mol of the diamines to be dissolved. Terephthalyl dichloride or a mixture of terephthalyl dichloride and an aromatic acid dichloride from the diphenyl series, as described above, is then added to the resultant solutions at from 0 to 20 DEG C in equimolar amounts to the diamines to give a reaction mixture. Tertiary amines in an amount of from 2 to 6 mol per mol of starting diamine are added to the resultant mixture, the mixture is subsequently stirred for from 3 to 70 minutes, and the end product is separated off. The resultant compounds can be used to produce thermally stable, high-tenacity, high-modulus fibres.
