The dental handpiece having a gripping sleeve (1) comprises a dental treatment tool (3) on one end and a connecting piece (4) for driving and cooling media on the other end, which piece is provided with a central guide pin (14), can be inserted so as to be freely rotatable in the gripping sleeve and is releasably connected thereto via a coupling hook. In the region of the insertion end of the guide pin the gripping sleeve possesses an annular groove (17) for accommodation of the nose (19) on a coupling hook (12) which engages in the annular groove under the action of a spring (18) and at the same time locks the gripping sleeve with the connecting piece. Under the action of a pressure member (21) accessible on the surface of the gripping sleeve the coupling hook can be pivoted counter to the action of the spring about a shaft (23) located transversely in the gripping sleeve, such that the nose of the coupling hook emerges from the groove, so that the gripping sleeve is unlocked and can be pulled off the connecting piece. <IMAGE>
