A description is given of a jaw chuck for gripping a tool or a workpiece. The jaw chuck comprises spaced, circumferentially arranged gripping jaws and toothing for the adjustment of the radial position of the jaws to allow objects of different sizes to be gripped. The jaws can be moved radially outwards into an open position to allow the object to be inserted. They can be moved radially inwards into the gripping position. The jaws have sloping keys to which are assigned inward-extending sloping keyways which are spaced apart in the circumferential direction and can be engaged with and disengaged from the keys on the jaws. An element is arranged around a collar in order to turn the latter into engagement and out of engagement with the keys. A spring presses the jaws axially outwards and radially inwards when the keys and keyways are out of engagement. The collar for the adjustment of the position of the jaws presses the jaws axially outwards and radially inwards into the gripping position when the collar is turned to bring the keys and keyways into engagement. The collar makes possible a free axial and radial movement of the jaws into the open position when it is turned into a position in which the keys and keyways are not in engagement. |
