Magnetic powder weld fault detector system designed and constructed for the automatic checking of weld faults (cavities/cracks) in welds and in the parts surrounding the welds of mutually welded basic materials in large oil tanks and the like. The magnetic powder weld fault detector system essentially comprises a magnetising device whose purpose is to produce a magnetic field along the weld between the basic materials mutually joined by welding, two lamps or spotlights which irradiate the magnetic powder particles with ultraviolet light, a magnetic powder scattering device which disperses the magnetic powder particles along the weld line or weld seam, and, finally, also a photographic recording device whose purpose is to record and reveal the magnetic powder particle pattern in each case and thereby also make it possible to detect and determine the weld fault on the basis of the shape or image of the weld powder particles attracted. The magnetic powder weld fault detector system makes it possible for only one employee to automatically check the welds produced between the basic materials for weld faults (cavities/cracks), with out-standing effectiveness.
