A method for the recovery and reuse of cobalt compounds from carbonylation processes starts from the waste salt which, in addition to alkali metal halide or alkaline earth metal halide, may contain approximately from 0.1 to 5 % by weight of cobalt and approximately from 2 to 20 % by weight of organic substances. The waste salt is stirred with water while being acidified, whereupon the insoluble organic residue is removed mechanically. The cobalt-containing solution is filtered and, by addition of oxalic acid, the cobalt is precipitated as cobalt oxalate. The precipitate is filtered off, dried and decomposed thermally with the admission of air, which gives the mixed oxide CoO.Co2O3. The recovery efficiency, based on cobalt, is 95 % by weight and more.
