A jet device for use in processing tow comprises a tubular entrance member, a flared exit member, a chamber therebetween containing an orifice plate and inlet means permitting gaseous fluid to be forced under pressure into the chamber and through the orifice plate towards the exit member. Preferably the device includes resilient means adjacent the exit member for retarding the exit of the tow whereby a build-up of tow occurs which thus acts as a filter for the gaseous fluid leaving the jet device. In the embodiment shown in Fig. 3, the jet device consists of an outside shell 10 containing several inner members 11,13,14 held by plugs 12,15. A passageway 16 extends through the device so that multi-filament crimped tow may pass therethrough. The conical outer surface 19 at the lower end of member 11 and the tapered surface 20 of the thin orifice plate 13 together form an annular orifice for metering the air flow from openings 24, 24<SP>1</SP> into a Venturi tube member 14. The air flowing through said annular orifice impinges on tow passing through passageway 16 to produce an opening or blooming effect on the tow. This blooming effect is further enhanced by providing a plurality of flat spring fingers 26, 26<SP>1</SP>, 26<SP>11</SP> around the outer surface of Venturi member 14 which have the effect of partially retarding the tow as it emerges from the jet. The retarding force acting on the tow can be adjusted by the position of clamp ring 28. The jet device is used in the manufacture of tobacco smoke filter as described in Specification 986,391 and plasticizer may be added to the tow in the form of an aerosol generated in an "atomizer" incorporated in the air supply system to openings 24, 241. Alternatively the plasticizer may be introduced directly into the jet and on to the tow being processed therein by a plurality of metering gear pumps supplying capillary tube probes located in the tow entrance tube 11 and/or in the Venturi member 14.
