MANUFACTURE OF CARBON MATERIAL FOR DESULFURIZATION

PURPOSE:To manufacture a carbon material with supeiror mechanical strength and SO2 adsorbing power for removing SO2 in waste gas by adsorption by carbonizing a mixture of noncaking coal with caking coal as starting material coal under specified conditions. CONSTITUTION:Caking coal such as bituminous coal is mixed with noncaking coal such as brown coal by 15-60wt% and crushed to <=60 mesh grain size. To this mixed coal is added 5-50wt% binder such as pitch or asphalt to the amount of the coal, and they are kneaded and molded into a spherial shape having 3-5mm. diameter or other shape. The moldings are put in a rotary kiln, and a heated gas contg. 3-10vol% O2 and 20-80vol% steam is fed at 1- 10Nm<3>/hr rate to 1kg of the molded carbon. Carbonization is then carried out while keeping the internal gaseous phase temps. of the molded carbon introducing end and the product discharging end of the rotary kiln at 450-650 deg.C and 800-1,000 deg.C, respectively.
