The invention relates to a safety shut-off device for domestic gas connections, i.e. for the connection pipes by means of which each individual house is connected to the gas main, which generally runs underneath the road. The invention can also be used in a similar manner for feed lines for other media in gas, vapour or liquid form. In the case of domestic connection pipes, there is the risk that they and/or the onward-leading gas pipes within the building will be deformed and thereby damaged and become leaky, due to the settling of the soil, the settling of the foundations, by unintentionally being caught and pulled up by excavators and other construction apparatus. In the case of gas, this can give rise to the risk of explosions. The object of eliminating this source of danger is achieved according to the invention by providing in the house connection pipe leading from the gas main into the house or in the gas pipe within the house leading to the gas meter installed in the house a safety shut-off element which is loaded in the closing direction by spring force or a weight, can be moved into the open position by an operating element and is held in this open position by a release device which, reacting to the spacing between a point on the gas feed line and the nearest wall of the building and/or to the angular position of this gas line relative to the wall of the building, releases the holding device when a predetermined adjustable spacing and/or a predetermined change in the said angular position is exceeded and thereby brings about the immediate closure of the shut-off element.
