Process for producing synthetic natural gas by reacting methanol with a hydrogen-rich purified coke-oven gas containing about 58% by volume of hydrogen, 7% by volume of carbon monoxide, 3% by volume of carbon dioxide, 26% by volume of methane and 6% by volume of nitrogen. The coke-oven gas is first compressed, then desulphurised and scrubbed. Methanol fed from a tank (8) by means of a pump (9) is vaporised in a heat exchanger (10) and then mixed with the coke-oven gas. The mixture enters a methanation reactor (11), where it is distributed below a fluidised catalyst bed (13) via distributor nozzles (12). The heat of reaction evolved in the fluidised bed (13) during the reaction of the coke-oven gas with the methanol to give methane is removed through an evaporator (14) connected to a steam collecting drum (15). <IMAGE>
