An edge filter for lubricating oil or the like having a cylindrical, rotatable filter insert is to be cleaned in the closed state by reversal of flow at a part of the filter surface. During the normal operation, the entire filter surface is intended to be available for use. The solution comprises a U-shaped profile which constantly lies with one leg on the filter insert and as a result, on its rotation, serves as a scraper and which, for cleaning, is pressed with both legs against the filter insert, so that a washing channel is formed which is connected to a flushing orifice and by which a reversed flow through the filter surface can be produced. With a combination of two such filters, an expedient apparatus is given for continuously operated machines.
