The invention relates to a supporting belt for surface sanding machines for working wood, which is guided on rollers within an endless abrasive belt, which is pressed against the rear surface of the abrasive belt by an abrasive shoe, and that surface of which, coming to bear against the abrasive belt, is provided with supporting strips. In order to reduce the frictional heat between the abrasive belt and the supporting belt, the invention provides that the supporting belts consist of a textile fabric coated with graphite. The pulverulent graphite can be adhesively bonded onto the textile fabric by means of a plastic adhesive. The supporting strips preferably have an angular outline.
